The road to recovery should not be limited to infrastructure. Equally important is the inclusion of the health agenda as one of the top priorities. Relative to this principle, Health Secretary Enrique T. Ona and Southern Leyte Congressman Damian Mercado recently led the ceremonial ribbon cutting and blessing of the Southern Leyte Provincial Hospital. During the event, Ona stressed that about 14.7 million families are now covered with Philhealth. The health chief explained that reducing the number of Filipinos dying without seeing a health professional and ultimately upgrading their health status is the marching order of President Benigno S. Aquino III. Ona added that Philhealth enrollment of the poorest Filipinos would mean a big reduction in their out-of-pocket expenses during hospital confinement. Also present during the ceremony were Governor Roger Mercado, Maasin Mayor Maloney Samaco, and other local officials. (31 March 2014)
